Otoscope or ophthalmoscope light not working: what to check
A short checklist to run through before you conclude the bulb is the problem. Your own manual always comes first.
When an instrument does not light, the bulb is only one possible cause. Work through these checks in order, and stop if the instrument is damaged or the manual says otherwise.
1. Check the power source
Battery handles, rechargeable handles and wall-powered handles each have their own checks. Fit fresh batteries, or check the charger and handle, as your manual describes. Do not mix battery types unless the manual allows it.
2. Check the switch or dial
Many handles have a rotating control that must be turned past a click before the light comes on. Some have a lock or a standby position. Check how yours switches on.
3. Check the head and handle connection
Switch off and reattach the head so it seats fully. Instrument manuals describe the correct way to join the two, which differs between makers. Do not force a head that will not seat.
4. Check that the lamp is fully seated
Let the instrument cool, then remove and refit the lamp following your manual. Manuals note that lamps must seat completely, and some require the pin on the lamp to line up with a slot. The steps are in how to replace a bulb safely.
5. Look at the lamp
A lamp that is blackened, loose inside or visibly damaged is likely to be at the end of its life. Handle replacement lamps by the base and wipe smudges off with a soft cloth, as one manufacturer manual advises.
6. Confirm you have the right lamp reference
A lamp that does not match the instrument may not light, or may not seat. Check the reference in your manual against the bulb. If you are not sure what it is, read how to find your lamp reference.
7. If it still does not work
Stop and contact the instrument maker or your equipment service team. Contacts, wiring and handle electronics are not something to repair yourself. In a clinical setting, follow your facility's equipment policies.

Frequently asked questions
Why does my otoscope not light with a new bulb?
Common causes are a weak power source, a lamp that is not fully seated, a head that is not fully attached to the handle, or a bulb with the wrong reference. Check each in turn using your manual.
How do I know if the bulb is the problem?
A lamp that looks damaged or blackened is a likely cause. The manual for your instrument is the best guide. If you have a spare lamp with the correct reference, fitting it is a simple test.
Can I try a similar bulb from another instrument?
Only if your manual lists that lamp reference for your instrument. Similar-looking lamps can differ, so confirm the reference first.
