How to replace an otoscope or ophthalmoscope bulb safely
General steps from manufacturer manuals, with notes on where instruments differ. Your own manual always comes first.
Steps differ between instruments, so follow the lamp replacement section of your own manual first. The sequence below covers what the manufacturer manuals we checked have in common, with notes on where they differ.
Before you start
- Switch the instrument off and let it cool completely. The HEINE instructions say not to change the lamp while the device is hot, and the PocketScope manual warns that the illuminator section can become hot.
- Have the new bulb ready and confirm its reference and voltage match your instrument. See how to choose a replacement bulb.
Steps
- Separate the head from the handle. HEINE otoscopes: disconnect the head from the handle. PocketScope otoscope: unscrew the head counterclockwise, then unscrew the lamp holder counterclockwise and take it out of the handle. PocketScope ophthalmoscope: unscrew the head counterclockwise.
- Remove the old lamp. Take hold of the lamp by its collar or end and pull it straight out. The HEINE instructions say to grasp the narrow collar and pull the lamp out of its guide tube. Do not twist or pry at the glass.
- Fit the new lamp. Push it in fully. On the PocketScope ophthalmoscope, align the pin on the lamp shaft with the slot in the head and press until it seats completely.
- Reassemble by reversing the steps, then switch on to check the light.
Good practice
- Handle the new lamp by its base. The PocketScope manual advises wiping the lamp surface with a soft cloth if it is touched or smudged, because this helps lamp life and light output.
- If the light does not come on, switch off and check the lamp is fully seated, then check the handle's power source as described in your manual.
- Do not use a damaged instrument or force a lamp that will not seat. Contact the instrument maker.
- In a clinical setting, follow your facility's equipment and infection-control policies.
