How to choose a replacement otoscope or ophthalmoscope bulb

Four checks that tell you which bulb your instrument takes, using the lamp reference and voltage from your own manual.

A replacement bulb has to match your instrument, not just look like the old one. These four checks take a few minutes and avoid ordering the wrong lamp. Your instrument manual is always the final authority.

1. Identify the instrument

Note whether the lamp belongs to an otoscope or an ophthalmoscope head, and write down the brand and model printed on the head and on the handle. Many sets use one handle with several heads, and each head can take a different lamp.

2. Find the lamp reference

Look in the operating manual for a section on lamp or bulb replacement, or on the old bulb's packaging. Manuals usually give a lamp number. For example, the Welch Allyn PocketScope manual names lamp no. 03400 for its otoscope and no. 03900 for its ophthalmoscope. Treat these as examples of what a manual can tell you, not as a fit guarantee for your own instrument.

3. Check the voltage

The lamp voltage has to match the handle's supply voltage. The HEINE instructions for use say to confirm this before fitting a new lamp, and mention a colored marking on the lamp base that identifies the voltage. Fitting a lamp with the wrong voltage can damage the instrument or the lamp.

4. Match the model number

Choose the ELVION model with the same reference as your manual, then read its guide: 03000-U, 03100-U, 03400-U, 03800-U, 03900-U or HPX06500. Do not choose by shape alone.

If you cannot find the reference

Send us the brand and model printed on your instrument and we will tell you whether we can confirm a matching ELVION bulb. We do not guess.

Next step

Once the new bulb arrives, read how to replace an otoscope or ophthalmoscope bulb safely.
