Otoscope and ophthalmoscope bulb voltage: 3.5 V or 2.5 V?

Replacement bulb voltage has to match your instrument. Here is how to check it, and the voltage listed for each ELVION bulb.

Otoscope and ophthalmoscope lamps are made for different voltages. Two that appear on ELVION pages are 3.5 V and 2.5 V. The voltage has to match your instrument, so check it before you order a replacement bulb.

Why otoscope bulb voltage matters

The lamp voltage has to match the handle's supply voltage. The HEINE instructions for use say to confirm this before fitting a new lamp, and mention a colored marking on the lamp base that identifies the voltage. Fitting a lamp with the wrong voltage can damage the instrument or the lamp.

How to check your instrument's voltage

  1. Your instrument manual. The lamp or bulb replacement section normally names the lamp and its voltage.
  2. The old bulb or its packaging. Some bulbs carry a marking on the base, and earlier packs may show the voltage you used last time.
  3. The maker's lamp chart. Welch Allyn's chart lists lamp references for each instrument, but it does not state voltage or wattage, so use it to find the reference and your manual for the voltage.
  4. Ask us. Send us the model printed on your instrument and we will tell you whether we can confirm a matching ELVION bulb.

Voltage listed for ELVION bulbs

These are the voltages listed for the ELVION bulbs. They are not a statement about your instrument, so match both the lamp reference and the voltage in your own manual.

Match the lamp reference as well as the voltage

Two bulbs with the same voltage are not always interchangeable. Choose the bulb by the lamp reference in your manual, then check the voltage.
